i like to do my backup manually, though its always good to keep a fresh backup from time to time specially at the time of upgrade. I had also faced similar situations in the past and now i don’t make any more mistakes lol, it becomes a real hard work otherwise…

This was one of the first plugins I implemented when I first got on WP – and everyone else should install it as well , it will def help them from not ‘ Crying over lost work ‘ if anything ever happens
