I make sure to keep a few type of backups, like the xml backup from the wordpress dashboard, and the php sql export from phpmyadmin.. just to be absolutely safe.in case we mess up, there are two great ways to get it all back, one is the cashe, but there is also the msn and yahoo cache which comes in handy if Google has not cached everything from the blog. the second is the archives.org which helps to get the very old posts.good to see extremetrix back, keep blogging, cheers, first thing first, always make backups.
