Finally the  much awaited wait is over. Yes the mobile number portability has been launched in India. Mobile number portability facility is now available across all Indian states and telecom operators from 20th January 2011. The Mobile Number Portability; MNP will allow mobile subscribers to change their service providers, within a telecom circle, while retaining their old numbers.

The telecommunication market has grown stronger and tougher these days. The telecome will be looking to improve the quality and range of the services in order to retain their existing subscribers and also to attract subscribers from other operators. Those who fail to do so, for any reason, will find it tougher to survive.

How to switch to another operator?

1. You have to send an SMS – PORT <10 digit number> to 1900 [Tollfree] ex: PORT 8057410440.
2. After sending ,you will receive an SMS with unique porting code or UPC from your current operator.
3. After receiving the porting code,you can buy any GSM SIM of your choice and fill the unique porting code in your application form
4. You will be transferred to your preferred operator in a maximum of four days. This transferring of operator would be taken place in a maximum of 1 week.

How much will it Charges for porting?

The charge for porting your number to another operator is Rs. 19/-, payable to the new service provider. It can be used by both new customers of any operator as well as old customers.

There is one thing which need to be kept in mind while exchanging the operator, post-paid subscribers need to ensure their billing dues are cleared before applying for number porting. Failing this, the request to the new porter will be rejected.

For pre-paid users, the balance amount left does not get carried forward to the new operator after porting – both kinds of subscribers start from a clean slate with the new operator.

According to Nokia, they have changed the availability of devices bundled with an Ovi music limited services, just to improve the customer services. Nokia, the world’s largest mobile selling company announced the discontinuation of free streaming music service in not just one or two nations but in 27 nations, now the service of Ovi Music will not be available.

Ovi Music was initially launched by Nokia to provide a reliable competence to the Apple’s iTunes, but later on failed to offer significant competition in the market.

In the countries where the subscription service is being discontinued, users will still be able to access Music Unlimited until the end of their existing subscriptions. Once their subscription period get over, no user will be allowed to use the service thereafter.

Microsoft had announced at CES that they would release the new touch mouse that has multi touch gesture to Windows 7. This will be a whole new experience for the user beside normal point and click operation. This device is the result of Mouse 2.0 project which was run by Microsoft research.

Some has used the pre-production version of this device and acclaimed it big time. This new mouse has multi touch gestures for three fingers. These can be used for navigating documents, managing windows and managing multiple windows, besides it allows one to use shorter shortcuts for the tasks he/ she normally do with the keyboard. It can be used for easy scrolling, snap windows left or right, quick maximize/minimize/restore, task switching and so on.

Did you know Microsoft has a download manager for Web browsers? I am sure not even 10% of the readers know it. As its name says, it enables you to download files like songs, zip files and multimedia, etc., in a more secure and better way just by using your Web browser, but tell me WHY would anyone need it? Though mostly all browsers come with an inbuilt download manager.

This is just like an ordinary download manager. According to Microsoft it is much fast and secure as compared to other download software (they think that they don’t care of security? Bad!) Though I can’t say how it is more secure because it does not have any extra features for security (it does not even support HTTPS extension to download something.. So how can one say it is secure huh?), moreover it does not support Google Chrome, Opera and Safari browsers. It is only available for Firefox and Internet Explorer.

In my opinion there are much better download managers available on Internet, I didn’t expect Microsoft to release such a basic and simple manager to download. If you still want to give it a try, then you can download it officially from here.

Steve also co-found and was CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, which created some of most successful animated movies in the World.

Ever thought how much Steve gets paid per month? Huh ever? This morning while reading The Times of India, came through a list of lowest paid CEOs and Steve was one of them. So what’s his salary? One dollar! Yeah! Shocked? Even I was too, then I thought how can one make living from 1$ per month? So Googled it and found that it’s just a ploy.

Ploy? Yeah! It’s just a ploy to save taxes. If Steve used to get the normal salary that a CEO gets, then he would have to pay 35% of the salary as tax.

So how he earns?

He too lives a luxurious life just as other CEO do. Disney Pixar is his main source of income, being one of the boards of the directors he is owning 138 million shares and Disney pays $.35 per share. So you can imagine how much does he make.

This proves that smart work is always better than hard work! Isn’t it? ;-P

McAfee Inc., released an update for their corporate editions of anti virus on Windows XP worldwide at 9am Eastern Time on 21st April, that caused computers in companies, hospitals and schools to stuck badly. Who so ever installed this update its computer got froze like hell because this update used to misidentifies a Windows file (svchost.exe file) as a Virus. They didn’t tell how many computers were effected, but this sure that the number was at least in thousand. They still didn’t how the error happened, but are trying to take effective measures. Just after some hours of that update they already posted a replacement update for download.

The computer problem forced one third of hospitals of Rhode Island to postpone electric surgeries and to stop treating patients without traumas in emergency rooms. Patients who were required treatment for gunshot wounds, bike-car accidents, blunt trauma and other potentially fatal injuries were admitted to emergency rooms, but didn’t get treated.

Because of this state Kentucky (a state located in the East Central United States of America) police were told to shut down computers in their patrol cars as technicians tried to solve the problem. Some big companies like Intel Corp., and TNSF foundation headquarters also lost computer access, according to a Tweet of an employee of Intel Corp., on Twitter.

It’s not un common for antivirus program to misidentify a legitimate file as a virus. However, the scale outage was unsual.

The New Google.co.in Search Page

Google.co.in, the Indian domain of Google has recently reordered its search page! The new page as you can see in the above pic, is more easy to use and has more accessibility.

You can easily filter out your results using the options on the left, and also search using the location via the option below the search box. The new look is more organised and clear than the previous one. You can see beautiful set of Web 2.0 icons on the search page and also, margins are introduced. You can switch through views using options on the left,  search pages from other countries, search for games and videos, etc. with the new options.

The new options also include searching according to time, you can look for pages within a specific range of time. You can also view the search results according to Timeline. Plus, there’s an option to reduce the number of shopping sites’ results displayed, this would help you to get better results if you aren’t looking for shopping.

Note: This new search page is only for Google.co.in and it loads only on Internet Explorer. You won’t be able to see it even if you’re opening Google.co.in from any other country other than India.

Don’t get shocked if I say that you can easily play video games with your eyes (yes! now you can do that). Today I got a news that a new computer game that is operated by eye movements has been developed by the students of Imperial College.  The students adapted an open source game called “Pong” where a player moves a bat to hit the ball as it bounces on the screen or the monitor to make it.

Can we fro our eyes too?

Players have to wear a special kinda glasses that contain infrared rays. If they won’t those glasses, then this new technology could cause severe problems in their eyes (even permanent damage too). To play the game a player has to wear infrared containing specs. A Webcam would be linked with the computer that would first scan the player’s eyes and then sync the eyes movements via Infrared.

According to it’s developers this technology can be used to create more complicated and sophisticated games and applications  within an affordable price. They also say that it could help the scientists to save a lot of money too because the eye movement systems that they are currently using are too expensive (25,000 Euros). But this technology is too affordable (with a starting price of just 25 Euros).

Researchers said that technology used to operate this game could further help paralyzed or physically not well patients to easily perform simple tasks (that were difficult for them, like writing, etc).

I  think that this technology could be an ultimate source of entertainment for both vide games addicted people and physically challenged people who don’t even know what is fun and entertainment.

Well, this is embarrasing that world’s most used web browser – Internet explorer’s market share is dipping down day by day. Not only in India, but in European countries too. Actually its market share is dipping three times faster in European countries as compared to India and other countries. A study by the Irish metrics firm StatCounter says:

The IE, as it’s ubiquitously called, has lost almost 20% market share in India in the past two years, even as Google’s Chrome and Mozilla’s Firefox make strident foray.

In India in later half of the year 2008 the percentage of computers having Internet Explorer deafult was around 70% where now in 2010 it is just 51%

Why is it losing Market Share?

According to me the main reason for loosing its market share could be the Internet explorer six. Now you might be thinking that how come IE Six could be the reason for it. It could be the reason because it is the default browser in Windows XP and most of the users still prefer to use XP as it is said to be the most user-friendly operating system ever designed. IE7 was released with Microsoft Office 2007 and Windows Vista. Windows Vista wasn’t a big hit just like Windows XP or 200 because it was not so user-friendly and used to slow down the computer (frankly speaking didn’t get any problem in Windows Vista, don’t know why others didn’t like it. I am on Windows Vista Ultimate for six months and yet not got even a single problem related anything). Most of the people didn’t like it and shifted back to Windows XP, which had IE 6. IE Six wasn’t at all good. Tech savvies guys could easily upgrade it latest version, but for no-techies don’t care at all about the browser they care what they have to do. So they installed other light and reliable browsers like Opera and Chrome. This could be one main reason for losing market share.

I think Microsoft had already taken some steps to get back their old position and IE market share back. They tied up IE Eight with their new Windows Seven, but because of that the company had to mandate a ballot screen of its rival web browsers in European countries – Chrome, Safari, Firefox & Opera {their shares may be increasing cause of this (Firefox 55%, Chrome 31% and Safari 4%)}

Few days back I got a news that they are taking web browsers now seriously so they are working on IE Nine too which would be faster and secure as compared to the previous versions of IE.

No one can say what’s going to happen in this war of web browsers, we can just wait.
