I still remember my olden days when I used to read newspapers and it used to be full of newses of crimes and attacks, but these days I don’t see even a single. Perhaps the people now understood that wars and attacks are just a waste of time and money, moreover they might be afraid of the new defensive mechanisms. Or they have understood that smart work is better than hard work (yeah!).

Cyber Thieves

This morning while searching for some good news, I got a big news that CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) have issued a high alert to all military formations and installations to get guard against ‘Focused large scale cyber attacks’. According to the alert these attacks are more likely to be launched this month of – April.

The effective measures would be taken to prevent the data from the servers to get stolen or ‘Hacked’ by the hackers. Military Establishment Defence Military staff at Washington have even stopped using their computers (and other devices too that needs internet connectivity) by directly connecting to Internet modems.

Their  Team and a Canadian of cyber security officials said that the attacks could be originated from any country across the world. There is a high chance of getting attacks from China* (the country which has cyber security military priorities at topmost) is more as most of the extreme hackers who are breaking high securitified servers daily live there. Because of this China had made cyber warfare one of the topmost military priorities.

A report reported that in month of March some Indian documents as a secret and six restricted documents were also accessed by Chinese hackers.

Sachin Pilot, who is minister for Information Technology and Telecommnunications said -

We need to be extra vigilant about cyber attacks and terrorism because this can inflict asymmetric nature, and therefore that much dangerous too.

He also observed and reported that government had not compromised this time and nor going to compromise too. A quiet effort is under way to set up defensive mechanisms.

Well, I can’t say anything that how they are going to tackle these attacks without any mechanism and proper planning that needs to be made, but yeah I can give some tips to the WordPress users to remain safe, tough precaution is always better than cure. Here are some tips:

• If you are designing a new WordPress blog, try not to make it look complex.
• Always keep a backup of your blog (can use WP-DB-Backup plug-in)  because anything can happen any time and try not make common mistakes that every blogger does.
• There is a plug-in available on the Web called – Login Lockdown that will help you in preventing the site being get hacked by brute force login attempts.

If you are a regular reader of Extreme Trix, then you may remember that couple of days back our site was deleted while upgrading and it took me almost two days to again make it up. My site was deleted because of my carelessness only. Satish bro told me on first day only to always keep a backup of site so that you can re-store it if anything happens to site by mistake, but didn’t take that seriously and forgot to keep a backup. When I was upgrading my site to WordPress 2.8.6 from WordPress 2.8.1 accidentally my blog directory got deleted (where Extreme Trix is installed) and everything was gone. That time I felt really bad, but thanks to Google Cache which saved my work and time. Somehow I was able to restore my site because of Google Cache (Thank you again Google! ). I don’t want any of my reader to face some problem so today I thought to write about a plug-in for WordPress called – WP-DB-Backup which can be used to take a backup of Database.

Backup

WP-DB-Backup allows you easily to backup your core WordPress database tables. You may also backup other tables in the same database. The best thing about this plug-in is you don’t need to take backup of your site regularly, just schedule a daily backup from setting page of the plug-in and it will be automatically emailed you or will be saved on your server.

Installation of the plug-in is very simple, just like a normal plug-in upload it to wp-content folder of your WordPress and activate it from Manage Plugins page of your blog. You may need to make /wp-content writable (at least temporarily) for it to create a backup directory. For example: $ cd /wordpress/ $ chgrp www-data wp-content (where “www-data” is the group your FTP client uses) $ chmod g+w wp-content.

Spam is the worst thing that every blogger is worried about. Although there are many spam control plug-ins which help us in controlling spam none of them is 100% reliable here are the best available anti spam plug-ins which I have used and reviewed.

Akismet – This plug-in is developed by Auttomattic Company and it comes inbuilt with WordPress installation. It checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not. You need a WordPress.com API key to use it. You can review the spam it catches under “Comments.” To show off your Akismet stats just put <?php akismet_counter(); ?> in your template.

WP-Ban – Most of the Spammers are bots which will comment from a particular IP and WP-Ban is very useful plug-in to avoid comments from particular IP’s and can be used to ban comments based on IP addresses.

WP-Spam Free – Once installed this plug-in will automatically delete comments and thing which I didn’t like in this plug-in is we can’t see the deleted comments.

reCaptcha – I personally hate captcha and at the same time I know that even my readers will hate that, but I hate Spam even more. reCAPTCHA is one of the best captcha plug-in. No doubt this is a great captcha plug-in, but I recommend this plug-in only for those blogs which will get lots of spam comments, as users will lose interest in commenting at your blog if you use captcha at your blog. So use this at your own risk.

• News Channels – New channels like IBN 7 and Ajj Tak always show cool news in all niches like technology, shopping, marketing, money making and a lot more. So I will advise you to watch news channels in your free time like while having your lunch.
• Google Alerts – is a very useful way to keep in touch of what’s going around the world. You don’t have to waste your time going to search engines and find something. Just add a Google alert for your favorite topic and Google will automatically email you about the latest information on that topic.

Once you develop a strong foundation in the niche of your own choice, take up a dedicated time of the day (away from any distraction) and just write in. I am damn sure covering latest updates in niche of your own choice would help you to get good traffic in minimum time.

Task – Try Google Alerts for a week and watch IBN 7, cover latest updates from your niche, after a week or two check your traffic and please do let us know via comment.

If you remember couple of days back I posted same post in Learn WordPress in three days series, I am re-posting this post because that post was a bit confusing and readers were not able to understand it.

To install WordPress MU on your Windows computer you need to create local server, Xampp For Windows can be used to create it.  Download it and  after downloading  run the installer. When it comes to the installation options page, select Install Apache and MySQL as a service. When your installation gets finished open your web browser and type http://localhost/phpmyadmin/ in the address bar.

Now you need to create a database for WordPress MU installation. To create a database click on “Create New Database” field, enter a name for your database and press the create button.

After creating database you need to configure you Windows for WordPress MU. Go to C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetc and open the file “Hosts” with notepad and add – 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain in the end.

Now your Windows is ready for WordPress MU installation. Just download the latest version of WordPress MU and extract the folder as it is in Xampp/htdocs directory. After extracting open this link in your web browser – http://localhost.localdomain/wordpress-mu. There you should see a WordPress MU installation page (select sub directories not sub domains. This will save you plenty of trouble later on.) Now enter the database info you created –

1. Database name – enter the name of the database you have created.
2. Database user – type “root” in that field.
3. Password – just leave it blank, please don’t enter anything in that field.
4. Databse Host – localhost
5. Table prefix – wp_

Done! now a success page will come, copy your password from that page, log-in and edit your profile and click on save button.

How to install Buddy Press on Mu?
